In the NBA and basically you can say the same in any professional sports rather it's NFL, NHL, or MLB. That every teams will have to go through the rebuilding process. Teams wants to be a contender all of teams have one common goal is not just only become a contender but to win a championship. Before I go further to give you the understanding of the rebuilding process let me briefly talk about and shows the guidelines if that is the right word I am describing you can say more like steps to become a contender.
While I view in any professional sports there are categories from rebuilding to a contender. Now of course if there a expansion teams they will build team from scratch get some of the players from other teams, and clearly they will be a rebuilding team. As for other teams been in the league for a while some teams will be rebuilding other teams will be retooling, or become contenders even teams that are contenders may, or require to retool the team to stay a contender eventually. It is like that in every professional sports maybe different ways to build a team since the salary caps, rookie deals, all that kind of stuff are different but all teams will go through a rebuilding phase, or a retooling phase to stay, or become a contender. Those are the three categories I just named them, and again let me name those three categories.

- Rebuilding phase
- Retooling phase
- Contender phase
Let me give you the definition just to give you a better understanding for those three phases I mentioned above. The rebuilding phase is basically is start rebuilding from scratch, or start over which very likely have a young team and maybe some veterans to mentor the young players for the rebuilding phase. Expect lot of losing for the next few years and have those young players develop and become what you are hoping usually rebuilding phase is start from building from the draft hoping you draft the next superstar to build on, and around him. A contender phase basically the team become a contender to potentially win a championship, and as for the retooling phase basically what it means is a team, or teams have to basically a team have to find a need of a replacements to replace the players, and not keeping some of the players. Usually, it is the contenders will eventually have to go through the retooling phase basically do some tweaks to the rosters the rebuilding teams may do a retooling phase if something doesn't work out but usually it's the contenders teams that have to do the retooling phase.
Understanding The Rebuilding Process
Now, you know the definition and the understanding of those three phases let's rewind, and I give you the better understanding of the rebuilding process. A rebuilding process can be very painful as fans watching their teams lose games after games, and are well a bad team because that team is in the rebuilding phase but a rebuilding phase later could pay off, and become a contender. Keep in mind nothing guarantees if things plan out with those particular young player but fans, and managements from your favorite team better hope it pays off.
The rebuilding process can be started in many different ways it depends on how the team's current roster looks. There are some teams in a win now mode who haven't achieve their goals being retooling for years, and years which is nothing work out because it's either due to injuries, players not develop, terrible coaching, or managements do a poor job building the team sometime all above. A mediocre team, or teams who trying to build a contender but instead the team is mediocre that headed nowhere fast, or a mediocre team that no direction meaning you don't know if the team is rebuilding, or contender because the way the management construct the roster. Usually the mediocre team, or teams may needs to start over in other words starts the rebuilding process, and the question for those mediocre team is how to get there, how to start the rebuilding process.
The Chicago Bulls is a very good example just recently they finally pick a direction they wanted to headed at, and that is start the rebuilding phase. For quite sometime the team have stuck in the middle ground for the last few years not going anywhere because either due to injuries, not doing a good job building the team, or both even fans such myself don't know what the Chicago Bulls are doing either they are in a win now mode, or they are rebuilding. If you look at last season's roster you will be clueless too even if you are not a Chicago Bulls fan so finally just this past NBA draft which is not to long ago on draft night they finally pick a lane, and decided to start over in other words start the rebuilding phase when they traded their best player Jimmy Butler, and acquire two young players Kris Dunn, & Zach Lavine, and traded up for the number seven overall pick who they selected Lauri Markkanen.

I am not going to give you my ten cents what I thought about the trade since this article is not about the trade it is about the understanding the rebuilding process. What the Chicago Bulls did is trade their best player their superstar yes I view Jimmy Butler a superstar but again this article is not about debating he is a superstar, or not it is about the understanding of the rebuilding process. Anyways, while I was saying they trade their only best asset while they include another assets which is the 16th overall pick part of the trade to acquire young prospects. Usually mediocre teams, or even teams that are contender time for them to start the rebuilding phase is they acquire multiple assets rather it's young players, or draft picks. That is what the Chicago Bulls do is acquire three young prospects when make a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
If you are a contender, or a mediocre team and it is time for your team to head the rebuilding process it is best to get multiple assets as much as you can rather it is a young players acquiring from a different team, or draft picks. The picture you see from the very top of this article is a image of steps on how, or what you need to do for the rebuilding process, and that is what you basically have to do in the rebuilding process if you didn't see the image here is the image here again below.
As you see the diagram above which is basically a cycling that all teams have to go through in the NBA but the only thing that is missing in that diagram is retooling. Now, this diagram that doesn't tells you and keep in mind I should mention this earlier that I found this diagram on the internet when I google it so this diagram wasn't create by me. Anyways, the one thing the diagram doesn't tells you that teams who are in a rebuilding mode not all teams have a superstar on their current roster they may have a player who is a all star but not a superstar but their best player on the team. So, technically in this diagram when you read trade superstar for assets probably will be more like trade superstar/all star for assets. Again, not all teams may not even have a player that are all star and just a player who is their best player on the team which could trade that player for assets too.
I mentioned that not all teams have superstars roster, and in the NBA they are teams who are bad teams for quite sometime haven't found that superstar yet. So it is a matter of luck in the NBA to get a top draft picks since in the NBA you have to be one of the worst team of course no guarantee you can get a top three even if you are one of the worse teams since in the NBA lottery handle differently than any other professional sports so it is a matter of luck. I hate the term tank and I am not going to discuss in details on how I feel with the term tank but the term tank in the NBA is to get the team bad enough to hoping to win the lottery, or at least get in the top three so they can draft a future superstar for their team to have a chance to be a contender. Let's face it in the NBA it is require to have a superstar to even remotely have a chance to become a contender, and most important achieve the goal to win the championship of course there is no guarantee if that superstar you drafted will turn out as you hope which that is the case that team will be in trouble so keep that in mind.
Now, after you draft a superstar in this diagram the next step is draft a supporting stars meaning draft a supporting cast to help build around the superstar the team have drafted. While you can draft roleplayers to build surround around the superstar but what this diagrams should put is also signing free agents is also another option to build around the superstar you have drafted. Which you see the diagram after say draft supporting stars also say sign free agents what property should say is draft AND sign free agents supporting stars. Now, the one thing I and this diagram failed to mention, or be more descriptive is a better idea to have more then one superstar at least 2 superstars to build around that should require if the team wants to win a title in the NBA. Also, teams also may lure a superstar who is become a free agent to come sign with their team to team up with another superstar, or stars.
The Golden State Warriors is another good example how they build a contender let me give you a dialog how they build that team to a contender. The team draft Stephen Curry who is their superstar to build around, they also draft both Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green now just in case you don't know and make sure there is no confusion the three players I just mentioned are from different draft class. The free agency they sign were David Lee and Andre Iguodala plus they acquire Andrew Bogut from the Milwaukee Bucks in a trade, and of course they hire Steve Kerr as their head coach which was two years ago which they not only become a serious contenders but also won the NBA championship. Now of course they make some addition in a draft, and free agency to surround their star, or stars now fast forward from last year bring basically the same team but loss in the NBA finals, and last summer Kevin Durant who now use to play for the Oklahoma Thunder was a free agent they recruit him, and he decided to sign with the Golden State Warriors. Which the team have to retool for many purpose one of them so they can sign Kevin Durant, and two to replace some of the players basically usually from the bench fast forward from this year the Golden States Warriors back to the finals, and this time they won the NBA championship.
The most important key to the rebuilding phase is patience. It takes lot of patience for the team to start gel which the players finally gets it, and develop what you are hoping for that player, or players become including if you draft a future superstar. Some players including draft a future superstar may take three, or four years some may takes longer to develop but other players may never gets it, or not become what you are hoping, and just become a bust like I say nothing guarantees even if you end up in the top three in the NBA lottery no guarantee if that player become what people are hoping for.
Now, before closing I failed to mention that in the NBA draft not always get a superstars in the top three there is always a chance that you draft a superstars after the top three for example the Golden State Warriors drafted Stephen Curry with the number eighth overall pick in 2009 NBA draft. Another good example the San Antonio Spurs drafted Kawhi Leonard with the number 15 overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft when they swap picks to the Indiana Pacers to acquire him, and now look at him he become a superstar in the league. In conclusion when teams take the rebuilding process, entering the rebuilding phase it will takes lot of patience, and hoping they strike gold I know it suck for teams may lose lot of games for the next couple years, or so but in fans general just hope for the best.
